From April 11th to 17th we’re celebrating the RHS’ National Gardening Week.
This year’s campaign promotes getting fit in the garden and we couldn’t agree more about how important that is! The benefits to gardening are endless – not least for your health.
Did you know that mowing the lawn for an hour can burn up to 400 calories? That’s the equivalent of jogging 4 miles, but much easier!!
Raking leaves can burn around 250 calories per hour and weeding racks up 200 calories so it’s easy to burn fat without even knowing it!
Mowing aside why not turn other gardening tasks into exercises? Digging and turning over turf are great ways to get your heart rate going; why not even ditch the dumbbells and move some plant pots around instead!
Getting outside doesn’t just have benefits for your physical health, it can also be great for your mental well being too! Exposure to the sun and great outdoors also means exposure to vitamin D which helps the body to absorb calcium and strengthens bones. Gardening is also a great way to relieve stress and clear your mind whilst relaxing and taking in fresh air.
