What to do in the garden in May

Spring has now well and truly sprung. The weather recently has been incredibly varied with thunderstorms one day, snow the next and then glorious sunshine! But hopefully all that is behind us and the sun is on its way!

Gardeners have been itching to get back in the garden and, for those deterred by the bad weather, now is the time to pounce!

You’ll have noticed already that warmer temperatures mean the grass is growing! For lawns in need of attention, or just for regular maintenance, here at Cobra we’ve got everything you could need. The Cobra lawnmower range now consists of almost 50 mowers so we’ve got something for everyone. Whether you are after an electric model or want a quintessentially English stripe from our petrol rear roller, or perhaps the cordless benefits of lithium-ion appeal to you – then we’ve got it covered!

May is a good time to start thinking about your watering regime for the summer. A water butt is always a sound investment and there are now other irrigation options on the market to help you recycle water.

Want to re-introduce some colour? Good news, sowing and planting out bedding can now begin. It’s also time to get your hanging basket planted. We recommend a mix of a good compost with a slow release fertiliser. Our top tip is to plant around the edges of the basket for a dramatic impact, and remember to look after it regularly and to keep dead heading throughout the summer to keep it flowering.

A pesky problem that will rear their ugly head each year are weeds. The best way to control weeds is to nip them in the bud early! Regular hoeing will help remove problems before they spread, and for more deep rooted problems such as daffodils, will need digging up from the roots to make sure they don’t return.

Hopefully these tips can keep you going whilst you’re out enjoying your garden. Be careful though, there still might be some late frosts looming so keep an eye on the weather forecast and be prepared to protect plants.
